High‑speed Isola PCB for advanced telecom backplanes

Isola PCB refers to a printed circuit board (PCB) manufactured using high-performance copper-clad laminate (CCL) material produced by Isola Group. Isola board is designed to meet the stringent requirements of modern electronic products in terms of high frequency, high speed, high temperature, and high reliability.

The performance of PCB largely depends on its substrate material. Ordinary consumer electronics products (such as toys and simple remote controls) may use FR-4 (fiberglass epoxy resin) material, but when it comes to high-speed digital, RF/microwave, automotive electronics, aerospace and other fields, more advanced materials are needed.

Major Isola Material Series and Application Fields

◈ High-Speed Digital Applications (Data Centers, Servers, High-End Routers, AI Accelerator Cards):
    ● Series: I-Speed®, Tachyon®, Astra®, etc.
    ● Characteristics: Very low Dielectric Constant (Dk) and Dissipation Factor (Df). These are the most critical performance metrics. A lower Df means less energy loss for signals during transmission, ensuring the integrity and transmission distance of high-speed signals (e.g., 56Gbps, 112Gbps SerDes).
    ● Advantages: Reduces signal attenuation, lowers bit error rates, supports longer trace lengths or more complex backplane designs.

◈ RF/Microwave Applications (5G Base Stations, Radar, Satellite Communications, Military Radios):
    ● Series: IS680®, IS550®, etc.
    ● Characteristics: In addition to low loss, these materials focus on Dk stability (minimal variation with frequency and temperature) and low Z-axis Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) to enhance the reliability of multilayer board structures.
    ● Advantages: Maintains stable electrical performance at high frequencies, ensuring the precise performance of RF components like filters and antennas.

◈ High-Reliability Applications (Automotive Engine Control, Aerospace, Industrial Power):
    ● Series: IS410®, FR408®, P95/P97, etc.
    ● Characteristics: Extremely high heat resistance (High Tg, High Td), excellent CAF (Conductive Anodic Filament) Resistance, outstanding mechanical strength and long-term reliability.
    ● Advantages: Capable of stable operation in harsh environments with high temperature, humidity, and thermal cycling. Offers long lifespan and low risk of failure.

    ◈ Halogen-Free, Eco-Friendly Materials:
    ● Series: IS410-HR, IS420-HR, etc.
    ● Characteristics: Compliant with environmental directives like RoHS, free of hazardous substances such as halogens, while maintaining high performance.
    ● Advantages: Meets global environmental regulations, suitable for electronics sold worldwide

    Comparison with Standard FR-4 PCB

    Feature

    Standard FR-4 PCB

    ~4.2 - 4.5 (less stable)

Can be as low as ~3.0 - 3.5 (more stable)

    Dissipation Factor (Df)

    Relatively High (~0.015 - 0.025)

Very Low (can be as low as ~0.001 - 0.005)

    Primary Applications

Consumer Electronics, Common Hardware, Simple Control Boards

High-Speed Servers, 5G Equipment, Automotive ADAS, Advanced RF Modules
