Versatile Electronic PCB for consumer electronics
Classification
PCBs are categorized based on below types:
◈ By Layer Count:
● Single-Sided PCBs:Conductive copper traces on one side of the insulating substrate.
● Double-Sided PCBs:Copper traces on both sides, with connections between layers made via plated through-holes(vias).
● Multilayer PCBs:Three or more conductive layers separated by insulating materials(e.g.,4-layer,6-layer,up to 64+layers).Used for complex,high-density circuits.
◈ By Flexibility:
● Rigid PCBs:Made from solid substrates(e.g.,fiberglass),maintaining shape.
● Flexible PCBs:Built on flexible materials(e.g.,polyimide),allowing bending for compact or dynamic applications.
● Rigid-Flex PCBs:Hybrid structures combining rigid and flexible sections.
◈ By Application-Specific Design:
● High-Frequency PCBs: For microwave/RF applications (e.g.,telecommunications).
● High-Density Interconnect (HDI)PCBs: Feature finer lines,smaller vias,and higher connection density.
● Metal-Core PCBs:Incorporate a metal base(e.g.,aluminum)for enhanced heat dissipation.
◈ Material Introduction:
Key materials used in PCB manufacturing include:
Base Material:
● FR-4:Most common; a glass-reinforced epoxy laminate with good mechanical/electrical properties.
● Polyimide:Used for flexible PCBs;offers high heat resistance and flexibility.
● PTFE(Teflon):For high-frequency applications due to low dielectric loss.
● Ceramic/Metal-Core:Provides thermal management in high-power LED or power electronics.
Conductive Layers:
● Copper Foil:Typically electrodeposited or rolled annealed copper, forming conductive traces.Thickness measured in ounces per square foot(e.g.,1 oz=35μm).
Surface Finishes(to protect copper from oxidation)
◈ HASL(Hot Air Solder Leveling):Traditional,cost-effective.
◈ ENIG(Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold):Flat surface,suitable for fine-pitch components.
◈ OSP(Organic Solderability Preservative):Eco-friendly and simple.
◈ Immersion Silver/Tin:Alternative finishes for specific soldering needs.
◈ Solder Mask:
A polymer coating(usually green, but available in colors, such as red, black, white, purple, yellow and so on) cover copper traces to prevent short circuits and protect against environmental damage.
◈ Silkscreen:
Ink markings on the PCB surface for component labels, logos, and test points.
◈ Adhesives&Insulating Layers:
Prepreg(pre-impregnated fiberglass)used as bonding material in multilayer PCBs.
