High‑frequency Rogers PCB for 5G antenna and RF modules
A Rogers PCB, shown below, is manufactured using high-performance laminate materials from the Rogers Corporation. These are specifically designed for high-frequency and microwave applications where standard FR-4 materials (like in the green board above) fail. They can often be distinguished by their color, which can range from a dark brown (as seen here) to black. Their primary advantage is very low signal loss and a stable dielectric constant over a wide range of frequencies and temperatures.
The key difference is in the substrate, or dielectric, material. This is the core that the copper traces are bonded to. The image below shows a cross-section that clearly illustrates this. On the left is the standard board from the first image, with its typical fiberglass-filled epoxy (FR-4) core. On the right is a high-performance Rogers material, which has a smoother and more uniform ceramic-filled PTFE (teflon) or hydrocarbon composition. This smoother, more consistent core is what allows signals to travel with minimal distortion and loss at very high speeds, making Rogers PCBs essential for RF, microwave, and 5G technology.
